Mental Wellness Month: Tips for Prioritizing Youth Mental Health

mental-wellness-month

Mental Wellness Month is celebrated annually in January. It’s a time to reflect and implement methods that can help improve overall mental health. At Western Youth Services, we are committed to supporting youth and families across Orange County as they navigate the challenges of mental health and all that it may bring. This month, we’re sharing easy to incorporate tips for mental health that can help youth build resilience and get into the habit of embracing mental health self-care.

What is Mental Wellness?

Mental wellness is when an individual feels balanced, resilient, and is able to cope with life’s challenges. For youth, mental wellness means having the ability to manage stress, build strong relationships, and navigate emotions in healthy ways. It involves creating a sense of self-worth, developing emotional intelligence, and cultivating a positive mindset. Mental wellness can also mean empowering young people to recognize their strengths, seek help when needed, and understand that mental health is just as important as physical health.

What Does it Look Like for Youth?

For youth, mental wellness can look a little different for everyone. However, it generally includes having supportive connections with family, friends, and mentors, as well as engaging in activities that promote self-care and relaxation. When youth are mentally well, they can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, laying the foundation for a healthy, fulfilled future. At Western Youth Services, we are committed to supporting youth in building these essential skills to help them navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence.

Youth Mental Health Today

Understanding the state of youth mental health is essential for raising awareness and taking actionable steps to support young people:

  • According to the CDC, over 1 in 5 youth in the United States experience a mental health disorder annually, including anxiety, depression, and ADHD.
  • Suicide remains the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10–24, proving that proactive mental health awareness and intervention challenges are needed more than ever. With early intervention and continued support, young people can have the chance to thrive.

5 Essential Tips for Mental Health and Wellness

Here are some practical ways to promote mental wellness in both youth and their families:

  1. Establish Healthy Routines
Consistent sleep, regular exercise, and balanced nutrition are critical for mental health self-care. Studies show that physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression by up to 30%.
  2. Mindfulness Exercises
Encourage youth to incorporate mindfulness exercises, such as deep breathing or meditation. Research from the American Psychological Association highlights that mindfulness can significantly reduce stress and improve focus.
  3. Encourage Open Conversations
Create safe spaces for children and teens to express their feelings. Listening without judgment strengthens trust and reduces feelings of isolation.
  4. Limit Screen Time
Overuse of social media is linked to increased rates of anxiety and depression. Set tech boundaries to prioritize real-life connections and unplugged activities.
  5. Seek Professional Support When Needed
If a child or teen struggles with persistent sadness, anxiety, or behavioral changes, professional guidance such as therapy and counseling can provide vital support.
